About The Book

Story Synopsis

Bridging multiple genres, Byron: The One Lung Filipinomenon is a story of Byron Thomas, an 18-year old openly gay student in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Enthralled with a fantasy of the American Dream, he is convinced beyond a doubt that he was born in the wrong country, and, with his parents’ blessing, he immigrates to the US. Finally free from suppression and the religious society of his homeland, Byron is able to start exploring his sexuality, while also dealing with feelings of inadequacy, the challenges of living alone, and fears of being an immigrant in a foreign land.

Then, one night, Byron brings a stranger home, and everything goes terribly wrong. In a possibly supernatural turn of events, he becomes a completely changed man. Inspired by Greek mythology, the story asks: what if you had the chance to be totally happy and healthy, but in exchange you have to start all over again, forgetting anything and anyone who hurt you? Would you take it?

Byron Thomas pursues the American Dream to find freedom and identity after a fateful night with a stranger. He undergoes a mysterious transformation that challenges his sense of self. Faced with the choice to forget his past for happiness, Byron’s journey explores identity, desire, and reinvention.
